Men's Soccer Ties Against William Paterson

EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team tied against William Paterson in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Saturday by a final score of 2-2. The Lions became 9-2-2 and 1-1-2 in the NJAC, while the Pioneers record now stands at 4-4-3 and 1-1-2 in the conference.

William Paterson scored first by way of a Chirs Fuentes goal in the 26th minute. The 1-0 score held up the remainder of the first half. TCNJ posted an 11-7 edge in shots, and 3-0 lead in corner kicks in the opening period.

The Pioneers scored just under two minutes into the second half with a goal from Johnny Gadaleta. TCNJ did not let the game escape them, and came back with a goal only three minutes later. Kevin Esteves sent a long, high, bouncing ball that was ran down by Justin Dominique. Dominique was on a one-on-one, gained possession of the ball, then out ran the Pioneer defender. He found the back of the net from 13 yards out to pull TCNJ within 2-1. The goal was his third of the season.

The Lions net the equalizer in the 62nd minute. Ryan Santos made a beautiful cutback move to get around the Pioneer defender. From the top corner of the box on the right side, Santos sent a pass towards the goalie box. Luke Yates ran it down and punched it in from the left post to tie the game up at 2-2. The goal was the third of the year for Yates.

Neither team was able to find the game-winner, and the match went into overtime. In the second overtime, Dominique made a pair of nice moves to get some space and fired a shot from the box. The Pioneer keeper made a diving save to keep the match tied.

With only nine seconds left in the match, a handball was called on William Paterson. Off the free kick, Esteves took a shot that was heading to the top of the net. The Pioneer keeper made another great save, and the match resulted in a 2-2 tie.

Daniel Mecadon made four saves on the afternoon in net for the Lions. TCNJ had a 24-15 advantage in shots on the afternoon, and a 7-3 lead in corner kicks.

TCNJ returns to action on Oct. 12 to take on Kean University at home. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
