No. 1 Field Hockey Bows out of NCAA Tournament

EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey field hockey team saw its season come to a close Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The top-ranked Lions fell 4-3 in overtime to sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall. TCNJ ends the year with an 18-1 overall record. The Diplomats improved to 18-3.

TCNJ broke through late in the first quarter. Camryn Ley played a long thru ball to Cayla Andrews. Andrews deked the goalie and gave the Lions an early advantage with her 32nd of the season.

Franklin & Marshall dominated the second quarter. Lily Mynott and Erin Coverdale each found the back of the cage, sending the Diplomats into the half up 2-1.

TCNJ quickly tied the score early in the third. Ley played a long ball from the right sideline. Tori Tiefenthaler deflected the ball by the goalie, knotting the score at two.

High drama ensued at the end of the quarter. As a Diplomat player drove down the left side, a Lion committed a foul. The umpire awarded a penalty stroke with five seconds remaining in the period. Kat Horsley converted the penalty to again give the Diplomats the lead.

The Lions quickly answered on a penalty corner in the fourth. Kayla Peterson ripped a shot that ricocheted off the post and on to the stick of Andrews. Andrews put home the rebound to tie the game again. The goal, her 33rd of the season, moved her into a tie for third most in program history in a single season with Lindsey Hatch.

Just under two minutes into the extra session, Mynott made a move and found herself at the top of the circle, her shot tucked inside the left post for the game winner.

The Lions finish the season 18-1 and closed the season ranked number one. The number one ranking was the first for the Lions since 2015.
