NEWARK, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's basketball team pulled out a double overtime win against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, 75-69. The Lions improved to 4-3 and 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 5-3 and 2-1 in the conference.
The first half was a defensive battle, and TCNJ came out holding a one point lead. With under four minutes to go in the half,
Sterling White converted on a lay-up, then
P.J. Ringel hit a jumper to make it a 22-15 lead. A three-pointer from
Mike Walley put the Lions ahead 25-21 with just 47 seconds to play in the first.
In the second half,
Travis Jocelyn hit a lay-up and was fouled, then made the free throw to put TCNJ ahead 31-24. Jocelyn then threw down a dunk off of a Ringel assist to put the Lions up 33-24. Ringel found
Ryan Jensen who hit from downtown to put the Lions up 38-28 with 14:50 to play.
Walley hit a trifecta to put the Lions up 53-47 with 5:24 remaining in the second half. A bucket from Ringel put the Lions ahead 58-51 with 2:50 to go, but Rutgers-Newark was able to rally and tie it up right at the end of regulation. A foul was called on TCNJ on a three-pointer, and Rutgers-Newark hit all three free throws to tie up the game with one second left.
In overtime, Ringel and Jocelyn hit jumpers to put TCNJ up 65-61. The Scarlet Raiders were able to tie it up with a Jamir Patterson jumper with only three seconds remaining, and the game went into double overtime.
In double OT, a pair of free throws from Jocelyn put the Lions ahead 70-69. The Lions made a stop on the next Scarlet-Raider possession, and
Randall Walko converted from in close to make it a 72-69 lead with a minute to play. The Lion defense registered another stop, and TCNJ was able to make its free throws to pull out the win.
Jocelyn and Walley scored 14 points each to lead TCNJ. Walko posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Jensen scored 11 points and brought in six rebounds. Ringel scored eight points, dished out five assists, grabbed five rebounds, and made four steals.
The Lions will return to action at Montclair State on Dec. 14.
