SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The College of New Jersey men's tennis team earned a statement victory Sunday morning, defeating 19
th-ranked Swarthmore College 5-4. The Lions improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Garnet suffered their first loss of season, falling to 2-1.
In doubles play, the team of
Thomas Wright and
Mitchel Sanders won 8-5 at number two to stake the Lions an early advantage. The teams split a pair of tiebreaks at one and three.
Matt Puig and
Justin Wain combined for a 7-4 tiebreak victory at three for the Lions.
Early in singles play, Swarthmore tied the score with a straight set victory at number one. The Lions would take control of the match at that point. Wain completed a straight set victory, followed by a hard-fought third set win by
Matthew Michibata. The Garnet responded with a win at number four, but Puig clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number five.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, Mar. 2, when they host Dickinson College at Hopewell Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
