No. 13 Wrestling Places Second at NCAA Mideast Regional

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College of New Jersey wrestling team completed competition at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Sunday. The 13th-ranked Lions finished second as a team, scoring 139 points. Sixth-ranked Ithaca won the team title with 166.5.
 
Individually, TCNJ placed five wrestlers in the top three, led by weight class champions Jake Giordano at 133 and Dan Kilroy at 174. Also advancing to the NCAA Division III National Championships are Robert Dinger at 141, Ryan Budzek at 149, and JT Beirne at 157.
 
Giordano won by decision in each of his two bouts Sunday on his way to the 133 title. Giordano will make his first national team appearance. Kilroy continued his dominance shutting out his opponent in a 9-0 major decision in the semi-finals. Kilroy took a 6-1 decision in the championship bout to secure his second consecutive regional championship and third straight national team appearance.
 
Budzek won a decision in his semi-final matchup. In the final, Budzek dropped a decision to nationally fifth-ranked Brett Kaliner. Budzek is making his second national team appearance, after previously making the squad in the 2015-16 season.
 
Beirne completed his march through the consolation bracket winning tight, one-point decisions in both the consolation semi-finals and third place match. Beirne will make his first national team appearance.
 
Dinger dropped a decision in the championship semi-finals before taking back-to-back decisions to earn sixth place. Dinger will make his first appearance at nationals.
 
At 125, Dan Ortega dropped a one point decision in the championship semi-finals. Ortega bounced back win a pin in the consolation semi-finals. In the third place match, Ortega lost an 8-4 decision and earned fourth place.
 
At 165, John Garda lost a decision in the semi-finals to eventual regional champion Austin Whitney. Gard fought back and faced a rematch with Alec Donovan in the third place match. Garda was unable to repeat his result from earlier in the regional and was awarded fourth place.
 
Daniel Surich and Thomas Marretta each rebounded from early defeats to earn victories in their respective seventh place matches at 184 and heavyweight.

After the tournament TCNJ head coach Joe Galante was named Regional Coach of the Year and the team's assistants were named Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
The five individuals advancing will prepare for two weeks before heading to Roanoke, Va. for the NCAA Championships hosted by Ferrum College.
