Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Barry Beal

First-Place NJCU Tops Men’s Hoops, 75-59

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – After ending Ramapo's 23-game home winning streak on Saturday, the TCNJ men's basketball team had another shot to end a team's home-court dominance. New Jersey City entered Wednesday night's game with a 9-0 record at home this season, and it managed to extend that streak to 10 at the Lions' expense in a 75-59 Gothic Knights' victory at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. NJCU currently sits in first place in the NJAC standings.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half with both teams just less than 35 percent from the field and neither team shooting better than 25 percent from three-point range. NJCU never trailed in the half, though, as it took a 33-24 lead into the break after starting with the first seven points of the game. The Lions were also held without a field goal for nearly four minutes to open the contest.

Despite falling behind, 7-0, to open the game and 18-9 later in the half, TCNJ responded with an 8-0 run to pull to within a point of the Gothic Knights. Joe Montano scored the first five points of that run, scoring on a layup from Travis Jocelyn before nailing a three off a feed from Randall Walko. Another feed from Walko, this time to Ryan Jensen, resulted in a three pointer to cap the run. That made it 18-17 NJCU with 7:27 left in the first half. Even with that run, NJCU slowly built its lead back to the nine-point advantage it took at the half.

Niall Carpenter hit a three early in the second half to cut the NJCU lead to 35-27, but the Gothic Knights grabbed control of the game at that point. For the five minutes following Carpenter's make, NJCU outscored the Lions, 14-2. James Julius' three pointer with 13:59 remaining gave NJCU a 49-29 lead, its largest of the night to that point. NJCU extended its lead to 30 with six minutes remaining in regulation.

Montano scored 13 points off the bench to lead TCNJ scorers, making three shots from three-point range along the way. Walko was the other Lion to hit double figures, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds. Jocelyn had a team-best seven rebounds to go along with six points.

The Lions return home for the final two games of the regular season. First, TCNJ hosts Kean for Senior Day and Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, the Lions will honor seniors Montano, Jordan Glover and Liam Byrne. As part of Fan Appreciation Day, fans will receive free pizza from Mamma Flora's, free cookies from Insomnia Cookies and a free TCNJ rally towel.
