Softball Sweeps Stevens to Push Win Streak to Six

PLANT CITY, Fla. – The TCNJ softball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions won both games of the doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology. They took game one by a final score of 5-1, and rallied to win game two 12-4. The wins pushed TCNJ's streak to six straight.

In game one, the Lions scored the first run of the day early in the first inning. Jess McGuire continued her hot hitting as she ripped an RBI double to left to make it 1-0. In the third inning, Annalise Suitovsky knocked in a run to make it a 2-0 lead.

Alanna Namit found a rhythm in the circle and limited the Stevens offense. She did not allow a run until the top of the seventh inning. The Lions scored three insurance runs in the sixth inning. Allie Immerso found a hole in the middle of the infield and drove in a pair of runs. Helena Coppola made it a 5-1 advantage with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Immerso.

Namit shut the door in the seventh. She racked up six strikeouts on the game and only walked one batter. The win pushed her record to 4-2 on the season.

The Lions continued to score early in game two, as they hopped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. McGuire continued to tear it up at the plate as she ripped an RBI single to give the Lions the lead. Stevens took a 2-1 advantage, yet the Lions got right back on top in the third. Lauren Conroy came up with a two out RBI double, then McGuire singled through the left side to put TCNJ back ahead 3-2.

The back and forth battle continued as the Ducks regained the lead to go up 4-3. Immerso led off the fifth inning with a hustle triple to center field. She scored on a wild pitch to tie the game up at 4-4.

Stevens mounted a threat in the fifth inning, as it put a runner on third with only one out. Relief pitcher Tori Aguilar in her first collegiate appearance got out of the jam unscathed. She got the second out by way of a strikeout, then Katie Winchock came up with a diving catch in right field to preserve the tie.

The Lions blew open the game with eight runs in the sixth. Coppola drove the first in with a triple to right field, then Kaitlin Kocinski came up with a pinch hit RBI single. Marissa Devincenzo, another pinch hitter drove a double into left center, and Megan Mayernik scored on a throwing error to make it 7-4.

The rally continued when Immerso drove in the eighth run with an RBI groundout. Conroy continued her hot hitting and drove in two with a single to center field, then McGuire put the exclamation point on the inning with a two run bomb to left center. The home run was her third on the young season.

Aguilar came up big in the circle in her first appearance. She was the winning pitcher and threw three shutout innings. Aguilar only allowed two hits and struck out a pair.

TCNJ will resume action on Thursday, March 21st. The Lions will take on Oswego State at 9:30 a.m. then Messiah College afterwards.
