FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The College of New Jersey women's tennis team fought hard Friday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-4 in the opening match of the team's spring break trip. The 23
rd-ranked Lions dropped to 12-2 on the season, while the 36
th-ranked Warhawks improved to 8-4.
TCNJ started strong in doubles play as
Navya Yemula and
Sarah Phung got TCNJ on the board with an 8-6 win at number three. After Whitewater tied the score with a win at number two,
Liya Davidov and
Katrine Luddy survived an 11-9 tiebreak to put TCNJ up 2-1.
The Warhawks dominated the first matches in singles play taking the first three courts and securing a 4-2 advantage.
Alyssa Baldi cut into the deficit with a straight set win at number four. Yemula lost a second set tiebreak, but bounced back to take the third set 6-1 to even the team score. At number six,
Julia Yoon forced a third set with a second set victory, but ultimately fell in the three set match that clinched the team victory for the Warhawks.
The Lions will have a quick turnaround when they face host Mary Washington at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
