CHESTER, Pa. – The TCNJ baseball team scored five runs in the top of the 11
th inning to defeat Widener, 9-4, in non-conference action on Tuesday.
Danny Borup and
Tommy McCarthy each had three hits and two RBIs to lead the TCNJ attack.
Â
McCarthy had the go-ahead hit in the 11
th. He came to the plate with the bases loaded thanks to an error and two walks. His infield single scored both Borup and
Aydon Chavis to make it 6-4, and that hit marked the Lions' lone hit of the inning.
Â
TCNJ took advantage of three Widener errors in the inning to score five runs.
Gary Otten and
Matt Giacose each reached on errors following McCarthy's hit, and each play scored a run.
Avery Epstein's sacrifice fly brought home Otten to complete the scoring, giving TCNJ a 9-4 lead.
Â
The Lions had that chance thanks to their ability to wiggle out of a jam in the bottom of the 10
th. Nick D'Alessandro led off with a single, and he stole second. After an out, he moved to third on a balk. With the winning run at third, the
Dylan Crowley intentionally walked Ricky Collings.
Â
Collings stole second base to stay out of the double play, and Andrew Cilberto followed that with a grounder to Borup at short. He fired to the plate, nailing D'Alessandro at the plate for the second out. Ryan Bennett followed with the winning run still at third, but Crowley struck him out swinging to end the inning.
Â
Crowley earned the win, going 3.2 innings while allowing just two hits and a walk. He struck out six.
Â
The Lions jumped on Widener early.
David Cardona III, the reigning NJAC Player of the Week, singled home
Thomas Persichetti to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Otten grounded out later in the inning to score Cardona, making it 2-0.
The Lions scored two more in the second. Borup's single to center brought home Chavis and
Joe Oczkowski.
Â
Widener got back into the game with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to tie the score at 4-4. Those scoring innings chased starter
Andrew Rowan. He had allowed just four hits through the first five innings before running into issues in the sixth and seventh. He struck out six batters in 6.1 innings.
Â
TCNJ returns to action on Thursday at Haverford at 3:30 p.m.
