Softball Opens NJAC Play With Sweep Over Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. – The College of New Jersey softball team won both games of the doubleheader against Ramapo College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Saturday. TCNJ took game one 4-0 and won 10-1 in game two. With the sweep the Lions have now won 13 of their last 14 games.

The Lions (15-5, 2-0 NJAC) got out in front with two runs in the first inning of game one. Megan Mayernik scored on a throwing error, then Gaby Bennett drove the second run in with an RBI single.

The game remained 2-0 until Kaitlin Kocinski doubled the Lion lead with one swing of the bat in the fifth inning. She ripped a two run homer to right center to give TCNJ a 4-0 lead. The homer was her second this week, as Kocinski homered in the game two win over DeSales.

Eliza Sweet threw a complete game two-hit shutout in the circle. She improved her record to 7-2 on the campaign and struck out six Roadrunners this afternoon.

Jess McGuire went 2-3 with two runs scored in game one. Bennett went 3-4 with an RBI while Mayernik went 2-4 with the run scored.

In game two, the Lions continued their trend of scoring early with a five runs. Kocinski reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice that scored Katie Winchock. Bennett knocked in another run with a base hit through the left side to make it 2-0 TCNJ. Elyse Nardozza, Allie Immerso, and Mayernik worked three straight bases loaded walks to open up the five run lead.

McGuire tacked on another run with an RBI sac fly in the second inning. Two more runs came in on a throwing error, then Mayernik knocked two more in with an RBI single to make it 10-0. Alanna Namit was effective in the circle, as she went 4.2 innings and allowed only three hits with one run. Namit is now 7-2 on the season.
