SALISBURY, M.D. – The College of New Jersey softball team split with No. 17 Salisbury University on Saturday. The Lions fell in game one by a final score of 4-3 before coming back to defeat the Sea Gulls 9-1 in game two.
The win in game two marked the 600
th of TCNJ head coach
Sally Miller's career. Miller has been at the helm of the program at TCNJ the last 24 seasons and has tallied a record of 600-315-3.
In game one, TCNJ got on the board in the top of the first inning.
Lauren Conroy drove in
Gaby Bennett with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Jess McGuire then laced a single up the middle, and the hit marked the 100
th of McGuire's career. She also has nine home runs and 65 RBIs during the course of her collegiate career.
Salisbury gained the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. TCNJ would drive another run in the fifth inning when
Katie Winchock drove in Bennett with an RBI groundout. The run would pull TCNJ within 4-2.
In the seventh inning, TCNJ did not let Salisbury close out easily. Conroy doubled in Winchock to make it a 4-3 game, however the Sea Gulls would not let the Lions pull any closer.
In game two, it was a 1-1 tie before the Lions broke through with five runs in the fourth inning.
Gabrielle Bobo collected her first collegiate RBI with a single up the middle to make it 2-1. The Lions loaded the bases, and Bennett knocked another in with a base hit. Winchock would work a bases loaded walk, then Conroy was hit by a pitch to push the lead to 5-1.
Marissa Devincenzo added the final run of the inning with an RBI single.
TCNJ put up three more runs in the fifth inning to seal the game. Bennett drove one in with an RBI groundout, then a pair of runs came across on a throwing error.
Eliza Sweet picked up the win in the circle, as she went the full five innings with only one run on four hits allowed.
TCNJ is scheduled to face Lynchburg College in a doubleheader tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. as part of the Salisbury Invitational.
