POMONA, N.J. – The No. 4/11 TCNJ baseball team won its 20
th game of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating Stockton, 12-1, to sweep the team's two-game series. The Lions also scored double-digit runs for the third consecutive game.
Â
All nine TCNJ starters got a hit, and three Lions each had three hits.
David Cardona III went 3-for-5 with a double,
Jacob Simon went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, and
Steven Massaro went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Â
The Lions got on the board with three runs after two outs in the top of the first. Cardona doubled, and he scored on Simon's single.
Tommy McCarthy doubled to bring home Simon, and
Gary Otten's base hit drove home McCarthy to make it 3-0.
Â
Stockton scored an unearned run in the home half of the second, but that would be all that freshman starter
Matt Volpe and reliever
Joseph Felipe would allow. Volpe threw five innings, allowing just one hit, to earn his fourth victory in as many starts. Felipe pitched four innings of relief, also allowing only hit, to earn the save.
Â
TCNJ responded to that lone Stockton run by scoring at least one run in every inning from the fourth through the ninth, alternating one and two-run innings.
Â
Thomas Persichetti doubled home
Matt Giacose in the fifth, and Persichetti later scored on McCathy's sacrifice fly to make it 6-1. McCarthy drove home three runs and also scored three times. Massaro doubled to lead off the sixth, and he later scored to make it 7-1.
Â
Danny Borup led off the eighth inning with a single, and he later scored after a couple more singles loaded the bases. McCarthy grounded out to bring him home. Borup had a pair of hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.
Â
That triple came in the ninth inning to cap the scoring. After Massaro singled and Giacose doubled him to third, Borup tripled to right center to score both runs, making it 12-1.
Â
TCNJ has now won at least 20 games for the fourth consecutive season. It's the first time the Lions have scored 10 or more runs in three straight games since March 2016.
Â
The Lions return home for Military and Family Day on Saturday against New Jersey City. The doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m.
