MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The No. 20 TCNJ softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader at Montclair State, winning 5-0 and 4-0. With the victories, TCNJ is now 10-0 in the NJAC and has won 13 consecutive games.
Â
In game one, the Lions jumped on Montclair starter Nicole Majewski with three straight extra-base hits in a row in the top of the first. After an out,
Katie Winchock doubled to left on a full-count offering.
Lauren Conroy followed with a double to left of her own, scoring Winchock to make it 1-0 TCNJ.
Â
Jess McGuire followed with a good at-bat, fouling off several two-strike pitches before launching a two-run homer to left. That staked the Lions and starting pitcher
Eliza Sweet to a 3-0 lead. That would be plenty.
Â
Sweet allowed just four hits and a walk in pitching the complete-game shutout. Sweet only allowed two runners to reach second, and only of those two made it to third. She allowed a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the third, but she got a fly out to center to end that mini-threat.
Â
Winchock led off the top of the fifth with a bunt single. After stealing second and moving to third on a fly out, she scored on a McGuire sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0.
Gaby Bennett led off the top of the sixth with a double. She stole third and later scored on a grounder to round out the scoring.
Â
Winchock went 3-for-3 and reached base a fourth time on a walk. Bennett was 3-for-4.
Elyse Nardozza was 2-for-4.
Â
In game two,
Alanna Namit threw her own complete-game, four-hit shutout. She struck out eight hitters in earning her 11
th victory of the season.
Â
This game was scoreless until the top of the third.
Allie Immerso led off with an infield single.
Megan Mayernik sacrificed her to second, and Winchock doubled down the left field line to score her. That gave TCNJ a 1-0 lead.
Â
After Namit wiggled off the hook of having runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth.
Â
After the first two hitters were retired, Mayernik and Winchock both singled to left. That set the table for Conroy. She tripled to center to clear the bases, driving in both runs to make it 3-0 TCNJ. McGuire knocked a single to right center, the Lions fourth straight two-out hit, to score Conroy and push the TCNJ advantage to 4-0.
Â
Montclair State loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it came up empty with the tying run at the plate. A bunt attempt with the bases loaded and two outs led to a force out, ending the threat.
Â
Winchock and Conroy each had two hits to pace the offense.
Â
TCNJ returns to action with a home doubleheader against Rowan on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
