EWING, N.J. –The No. 16 TCNJ softball team swept Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday afternoon in NJAC action. TCNJ took game one by a 4-1 final, then won game two by a final score of 5-0.
In game one, the Scarlet Raiders poised a scoring threat in the top of the third inning. Jackie Lara of Rutgers Newark hit a double to left field and the baserunner Jackie Arute rounded third trying to score. The throw from

Megan Mayernik, and Mayernik gunned down Arute at home to preserve the zero on the scoreboard.
The Lions put up a four spot in the third inning. Immerso slapped a base hit to that scored the first.
Lauren Conroy then knocked an opposite field base hit to push across two and make it a 3-0 advantage.
Jess McGuire would drive Conroy home with an RBI single to left field.
TCNJ sophomore pitcher
Alanna Namit entered the game in the sixth inning and worked out of trouble. The Scarlet Raiders pushed one across the board and had bases loaded, yet Namit would not allow any more to score. She shut down Rutgers-Newark in the seventh to record her first save of the campaign.
Eliza Sweet earned the win to improve to 11-3. She went five innings and allowed only one run while striking out four.
In game two,
Camryn Davies pushed over the first run with an RBI groundout in the second inning. Conroy struck again in the third inning when she drove an RBI double into center to make it a 2-0 lead, then McGuire drove in Conroy with an RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-0 TCNJ.
In the circle, Namit was locked in and mowed down the Scarlet Raider offense. After allowing a base hit in the second inning, she retired the final 18 batters to earn the complete game shutout. She struck out 12 batters in game two.
In the fourth inning,
Gaby Bennett ripped a leadoff triple into the right field corner.
Elyse Nardozza pushed Bennett home with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Francesca Pugliese came in on an error to score the fifth run. Namit earned the win to improve to 12-2 on the season.
Following the doubleheader, the Lions held senior day to honor the Class of 2019. The senior members of TCNJ are Bennett,
Sara Bielamowicz, McGuire,
Francesca Pugliese, and
Marissa Pugliese. After the doubleheader sweep, these five student-athletes have been a part of 101 wins the last four years at TCNJ.
The Lions return to action Thursday, for an NJAC doubleheader at New Jersey City University.
