JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The No. 15 TCNJ softball team continued its winning ways on Thursday. The Lions swept New Jersey City University in a conference doubleheader by final scores of 13-0 and 20-3. The Lions are now 28-6 overall including 15-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The wins today have locked up the regular season conference title for the Lions, and the number one seed in the upcoming NJAC tournament. TCNJ is also 26-2 in its last 28 games.
Alanna Namit and
Kristen Barrera combined to throw a no-hitter in game one. Namit pitched a strong 4.1 innings and racked up nine strikeouts while only allowing a pair of walks. Barrera capped off the no-hitter with the final two outs in the fifth inning. Namit had thrown five career no-hitters coming into today.
The Lions scored early and often in game one, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
Annalise Suitovsky made it a four run advantage with an RBI base knock. In the fourth, a pair of runs scored on an error and a wild pitch, then
Gaby Bennett made it a 7-0 lead with an RBI single.
The scoring continued throughout the game, and the Lions finished strong with six in the fifth. In game one,
Katie Winchock went 3-4 with two RBIs, while Bennett posted that same line.
Lauren Conroy went 2-4 with two RBIs, and Suitovsky went 2-3 with a pair of runs driven in.
Game two followed the same pattern as game one, as an offensive attack led the charge to compliment strong pitching.
Jess McGuire began the scoring with a two run home run in the first inning. The round tripper was her seventh of the year.
NJCU tied it up with two runs in the bottom of the first, but TCNJ reclaimed the lead in the second. Winchock ripped a double with the bases loaded to make it a 5-2 game. Conroy knocked in Winchock with a base hit, then Bennett drove in two more with a double to make it 8-2.
In the third,
Allie Immerso drove in a run with an RBI double, then Conroy ripped a three run homer to left to extend the lead to 13-2. Bennett notched her first career home run in the fourth inning to make it a 20-3 ballgame.
Eliza Sweet earned the win in the circle. She went the full five and struck out seven batters while only walking one.
TCNJ will close out the regular season with a trip to William Paterson on Saturday, April 27.
