EWING, N.J. – Despite 11 strikeouts by the pitching staff on the day, The College of New Jersey softball team fell 2-0 to Mount Aloysius College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III regional tournament. The Mounties improved to 33-8 with the win, while the ninth-ranked Lions fell to 33-7.
Â
Mount Aloysius opened the scoring in the top of the third on an RBI single to center with two outs in the inning.
Eliza Sweet was then able to work out of a bases loaded jam by inducing a pop-up to prevent further damage. The Lions put two on base during the bottom of the fourth with two outs, but were unable to get on the scoreboard after a ground out ended the frame. The Mounties then added a run in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0 after
Alanna Namit entered the circle for the Lions to start the inning. Namit had struck out the first two batters she faced before allowing two singles and two walks.
Â
After working out of the bases loaded situation, the Lions created a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of half of the fifth as they loaded the bases with two outs on an infield single and walk. Unfortunately for TCNJ, the rally ended with a ground out to second base.
Jess McGuire would lead off the bottom of the sixth with a double that just bounced off the top of the fence and back in play, and advanced to third on a ground out. Namit then worked out of another bases loaded jam, this time with one out, behind a strikeout and fly out to center.
Â
Sweet struck out six batters in four innings, and Namit punched out five in three innings.
Â
Katie Winchock and
Allie Immerso each had a pair of hits to lead the Lions offense, with Winchock reaching base three times in the game.
Â
The Lions return to action when they face Arcadia University at 1:30 p.m. in Dr. June Walker Field.
