No. 12 Softball Defeats Rowan to Advance to NJAC Final

EWING, N.J. – On Saturday afternoon, the No. 12 TCNJ softball team defeated No. 17 Rowan by a final score of 5-2 in the NJAC Tournament. The Lions are the lone undefeated team left in the NJAC tourney, and will compete for the conference championship tomorrow. TCNJ is also an incredible 31-2 in its last 33 games.

TCNJ began the scoring in the second inning. Gaby Bennett ripped a solo home run down the left field line. The homer was her second of the season and tucked inside of the foul pole.

The Profs got out in front in the fourth with an RBI single from Morgan Zane, and a sac fly from Christina Gerino. That one run lead did not last long, as the Lions drew even in the bottom half of the fourth.

Annalise Suitovsky led off with a base hit to right field. Camryn Davies then laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced pinch runner Francesca Pugliese to second. With two outs, Megan Mayernik hit one back to the pitcher who overthrew first base and Pugliese came around to score.

TCNJ took command of the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Suitovksy jump started the offense again with a double to right center. Elyse Nardozza moved her over with a ground out, then Davies worked a walk. The next batter was Mayernik who laid down a textbook bunt that went in between the pitcher and the catcher. Suitovsky was able to beat the ball home to make it 3-2.

Allie Immerso made it a 4-2 game with a swinging bunt. Much like Mayernik's, it went right into the area between pitcher and home, and pinch runner Lindsay Zengel came in to score. Katie Winchock made it a 5-2 lead with an RBI groundout.

Alanna Namit earned a win after coming on in relief for the second day in a row. She threw four shutout innings to improve to 15-2 on the season.

TCNJ will compete for the NJAC Championship tomorrow, against the winner of Kean vs Rowan. Game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
