WASHINGTON, D.C. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team opened up the 2019 season with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over Lycoming College on Friday. TCNJ was trailing 1-0 with under a minute to play, yet rallied to tie it up and take the victory in overtime.
In the first half, both sides were unable to break through, and the match remained scoreless at intermission. TCNJ got off three shots in the opening period, while Lycoming had two looks.
Lycoming took the lead just over 16 minutes into the second half. Tanner Fonjweng converted on a penalty kick to put Lycoming out on top.
Justin Dominique had a look for TCNJ with a header that went wide just under seven minutes to play. Dominique would net the equalizer with only 44 seconds remaining to ice the match up at 1-1.
Kevin Esteves sent in a corner kick that was bouncing around in front, then Dominique corralled it and found the back of the net. The goal marked the first of his collegiate career.
Lycoming would have an opportunity for the game-winner with just 23 seconds to go, yet the shot hit the crossbar and the match went into overtime.
Ryan Vazquez net the game-winner just about five minutes into the extra session. Vazquez punched in a bouncing ball with an acrobatic finish near the penalty spot to give TCNJ the exciting victory.
In net for TCNJ was
Daniel Mecadon, who made four saves en route to picking up the win. Dominique paced the Lions with four shots, while Vazquez got off three. On the game TCNJ out-shot Lycoming 12-10.
The Lions will resume the Turk Emekli Classic hosted by Catholic University tomorrow. TCNJ will square off against Gettysburg College at 2:00 p.m.
