MADISON, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated FDU-Florham on Wednesday night by a final tally of 5-4. TCNJ improved its record to 5-1, while FDU-Florham fell to 1-2-1 on the young season.
Just over four minutes in the Lions began the scoring.
Ryan Vazquez punched in a penalty kick to make it 1-0. The goal was the fourth of the year for Vazquez.
FDU-Florham countered with a goal of its own three minutes later, and took a 2-1 lead in the 11
th minute. That lead did not last very long, and the goals kept coming.
Kevin Esteves scored in the 23
rd minute off of a
Timmy Suchora assist. The goal was the first of the season for Esteves.
The Red Devils took a 3-2 lead right before the end of the half, as they scored in the 43
rd minute. In the first half, TCNJ out-shot FDU-Florham 8-4.
The high scoring contest continued, as
Dante Bettino found the back of the net in the 63
rd minute to tie things up at 3-3. The goal was the first of the year for Bettino. A few minutes after that,
Matthew Nastarowicz net his first of the year top put TCNJ on top 4-3.
TCNJ kept the pressure on the FDU-Florham defense, and scored again in the 68
th minute for its third goal in five minutes.
Sam Monaco net his first of the year to extend the lead to 5-3.
FDU-Florham drew within one in the 82
nd minute after a penalty kick goal, yet TCNJ did not allow them to tie it up to secure the victory.
The Lions out-shot the Red Devils 14-8 on the game, and held a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
Next up for TCNJ is a road game at College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
