EWING, N.J. – In a match-up of top-ten teams, The No. 2/7 College of New Jersey women's soccer team was edged by Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1. TCNJ dropped to 3-1-0 on the young season, while Johns Hopkins improved to 4-1-1.
Johns Hopkins had a prime opportunity in the 12
th minute to score, yet TCNJ keeper
Nicole DiPasquale made save ranging to her left to keep the zero on the board. TCNJ struck in the 25
th minute to take the lead. From the left side of the box,
Nina Carlson sent in a bouncing ball that found
Randi Smith at the right post. Smith tapped it in for her second goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Blue Jays would have the equalizer about two minutes later, as Emily Maheras punched in a header off of a corner kick to tie the game up.
The fast paced action continued, as
Taylor Nolan had two shots on goal only a minute later. The Johns Hopkins keeper was able to come up with both saves to keep the game tied up. DiPasquale registered another save in the 31
st minute.
In the first half, TCNJ out-shot Johns Hopkins 12-5.
Amelia Curtis and
Despina Lianidis each had a look for the Lions, yet were turned away by the keeper in the 56
th and 57
th minute.
Johns Hopkins broke through in the 70
th minute to take the lead. Maddy Rocks tapped a ricochet shot that came off of a free kick and hit the crossbar to put Johns Hopkins up 2-1.
The Lions out-shot the Blue Jays 21-11 on the game, and held possession 53% of the match.
Next up for TCNJ is another ranked opponent, as the Lions will travel to No. 14/21 Stevens Institute of Technology on Sept. 15 for a 12:00 p.m. start time.
