HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 2/7 TCNJ women's soccer team defeated No. 14/21 Stevens Institute of Technology by a final score of 3-1 on Sunday.
The Ducks got on the board first in the 13
th minute with an Ally Wanzor goal. The remainder of the first half, the Lions had scoring opportunities as they tallied 12 shots in the first period. Â
Lauren McLaughlin got off a shot in the 41
st minute yet was denied by the Stevens keeper. The Ducks took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Lions came out of the second half strong and tied it up in the 49
th minute.
Amelia Curtis sent in a free kick from the left sideline, and
Nikki Butler punched in a header to tie the match 1-1. The goal was the third of the season for Butler.
TCNJ took the lead only six minutes after Butler's goal.
Kelly Carolan net her third of the year to put the Lions up 2-1.
Nina Carlson sent in a cross that found Carolan in the box, and she punched it in to give the Lions the lead.
Stevens had a shot off of a corner kick in the 71
st minute, yet TCNJ keeper
Nicole DiPasquale came up with the save to keep the lead at 2-1.
Julianna Bertolino scored an insurance goal for TCNJ in the 76
th minute.
Despina Lianidis sent in a free kick that bounced off of the Stevens keeper and was rolling along the goal line. Bertolino tapped it in to put the Lions up 3-1. The goal was her first of the season. The Lions were able to control the rest of the game to secure the victory.
The Lions out-shot the Ducks 15-9 on the afternoon. DiPasquale tallied four saves on the match.
Next up for TCNJ is a home game against Widener University on Sept. 18.
