EWING, N.J. – The No. 7/10 TCNJ women's soccer team topped Rutgers-Newark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Saturday by a final score of 6-0. The Lions improved their record to 6-1 on the year, while the Scarlet Raiders dipped to 5-4.
The Lions struck first once again in the 20
th minute.
Nina Carlson sent a low pass to
Taylor Nolan from just beyond the left post. Nolan punched it in from the middle to put TCNJ on top. The goal was the second of the year for Nolan.
The Lions were able to stifle the Rutgers-Newark offense and limit its opportunities. The Scarlet Raiders did not register any shots in the first half.
TCNJ scored just one minute into the second half. Nolan sent in a shot that was saved by the Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper, then
Randi Smith was denied as well. The second rebound wound up at the feet of
Kelly Carolan who buried it to make it 2-0. The goal was her fourth of the season.
Smith net a goal of her own to make it a 3-0 lead.
Julianna Bertolino sent a beautiful long pass from the left side to Smith who was in close to the right. She beat the keeper for her third goal of the year.
The goals kept coming for TCNJ, as
Lindsay O'Keefe found the back of the net in the 80
th minute.
Caroline Rubin sent a through ball that found O'Keefe, and she slipped it inside the right post with a lefty shot from 15 yards out. That was O'Keefe's third goal of the season.
Only four minutes later,
Ava Garay scored off of an O'Keefe assist. O'Keefe dished it to Garay who was in the center, and she punched it in from nine yards out. Garay added a second goal four and a half minutes later off of a Rubin assist to put the exclamation mark on the win. The goals were the second and third for Garay this year.
TCNJ out-shot Rutgers-Newark 30-2 on the game.
Nicole DiPasquale picked up the shutout win in net, and made a pair of saves on the afternoon.
Next up for TCNJ is a home game against York College (Pa) on Sept. 23.
