No. 3 Field Hockey Stays Unbeaten

RADNOR, Pa. – The College of New Jersey field hockey team remained unbeaten Tuesday, defeating Cabrini College 8-0. The third-ranked Lions improved to 7-0 on the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 1-7.

Recently named NJAC Rookie of the Week Jess Hatch continued her strong freshman campaign opening the scoring just over a minute into the game. Hatch made the insert on a corner, then received the ball back on a pass by Tori Tiefenthaler before scoring her third goal of the season. Tiefenthaler then got into the goal column as she and Cayla Andrews got behind the Cavaliers defense. Andrews played the ball ahead to Tiefenthaler who put the Lions up 2-0. TCNJ held the lead into the end of the first quarter.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Tori Hannah took advantage of another Lion corner. Hannah received the ball at the top of the arc and ripped a shot that beat the Cabrini goalie. TCNJ carried the three goal lead into the half.

Midway through the third quarter, it was the counter attack that got the Lions on the board. After Cabrini had possession near the TCNJ arc, the Lions made a long outlet that Tori Hannah took around midfield. Hannah played a long ball into the arc that Cayla Andrews touched around the goalie and into the empty net. Andrews wasted no time scoring again. After a scrum in front of the Cabrini goalie, Andrews eventually pushed the ball into the net for her national leading 15th of the season. Andrews had scored multiple goals in six of seven games this season.

Late in the third Sophie Popp split three Cavalier defenders and beat the goalie for her first career goal.

The Lions closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the fourth. Kayla Peterson took a shot that beat the goalie. Camryn Ley gave the ball an extra push to get across the line for her second of the season. Samantha Reed then hit home a rebound of her own shot to produce the final score.

The Lions are off until Thursday, Oct. 3 when they travel to 10th-ranked Ursinus College. Game time is 7 p.m.
