GENEVA, N.Y. – The College of New Jersey men's tennis team competed in the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament Friday. The Lions advanced four singles players and one doubles team to round two which took place in the afternoon. Two singles players and the doubles team advanced to day two tomorrow.

Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain will represent the Lions in singles play. The will begin the round of 16 tomorrow morning.
Thomas Wright and
Gokul Murugesan will play in the doubles quarterfinals tomorrow.

Matthew Michibata

Michibata cruised through the first round of singles play, topping Ioannis Binopolous of Union 6-2, 6-4. In the second round he faced Jeremy Auh of Vassar. Auh was making his first appearance in the second round after two prior first round exits, and Michibata ensured Auh's run would end early again. Michibata won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

In the round of 16 tomorrow, Michibata faces Abraham Yohaness of RPI. Yohaness, a freshman, entered the tournament unseeded. He also won both of his first two matches in straight sets.

Justin Wain
Â
Wain made quick work of first time regional qualifier Patrick Matthews of RIT in the opening round with a 6-2, 6-0 win. In the second round, Wain was even better. Wain defeated freshman Nathan Tauber of Scranton 6-0, 6-0.

In the third round, Wain will face JT Wynne of Skidmore. Wynne, the second seed, won both of his matches in straight sets. Wynne is no stranger to this portion of the tournament, as he captured both the singles and doubles regional titles in 2017.

Nikola Kilibarda
Â
Kilibarda got to play bonus tennis in the opening round against Stefan Rodic of NYU. Kilibarda took the opening set 6-1. In the second set, Rodic fought back to take the set 6-2. In the superbreaker, Kilibarda had to go to 11, winning the final set 11-9. In the second round, he faced top-seeded Alan Dubrovsky of Hobart. The 2018 singles and doubles regional champ defeated Kilibarda 6-0, 6-3.

Thomas Wright
Wright was strong in his opening action Friday. The senior defeated Jordan O'Connell of St. John Fisher 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Wright faced Jack McClaren of Skidmore. McClaren, a 5-8 seed, took the opening set 6-3. Wright fought back to take the second set 7-5. In the super breaker, Wright and McClaren fought tough, but McClaren came out on top 10-8.

Nick Matkiwsky

Matkiwsky received an unfavorable draw when he faced Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez of RPI in the opening round. The three seed defeated Matkiwsky in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

Telluri faced Yudai Teruyama of RPI in the first round. Telluri fell to the 9-16 seed 6-2, 6-1.

Matkiwsky and Michibata entered the regional seeded fourth. The duo faced Sahaj Somani and Pasquale Procaccino of Rochester in the first round. Somani and Procaccino pulled of the upset with an 8-6 victory.

Sean Reilly & Akul Telluri

Reilly and Telluri opened with the three seed Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie. Castillo-Sanchez is a former ITA regional champion and showed why with an 8-1 first round victory.

Akul Telluri went 5-3 in doubles this fall.

Gokul Murugesan & Thomas Wright

Murugesan and Wright faced Eric Stein and Joe Reiner of Hamilton in the opening round. The Lions duo did not give the Hamilton pair a warm welcome to the regional, defeating the pair 8-2. In the second round, the Lions matched up against Jack McClaren and Jason Keye of Skidmore. Wright avenged his singles defeat to McClaren as he and Murugesan dispatched the 5-8 seed 8-5.

The duo will face Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson of Hobart in the quarterfinals. Dubrovsky and Anderson are the two seed, but they are also the defending regional champions.
