UNION, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team earned its fifth win in a row with a 94-67 blowout victory over Kean. The win was additionally the 12
th in the last 14 games for TCNJ. The Lions improved to 16-8 overall and 13-4 in the NJAC. Kean fell to 6-18 and 3-14 in the conference.
The Lions' offense exploded in the first half for 51 points. TCNJ complimented the efficient offense with tough defense and limited the Cougars to just 27 points in the first half. A 23-5 run from TCNJ to start the game set the tone for the afternoon.
The first six buckets for TCNJ were all three-pointers.
Tommy Egan and
Ryan Jensen both hit from long range to start the offensive outburst.
Randall Walko,
Travis Jocelyn, and
Danny Bodine each made a trifecta to push the lead to 15-5. Walko hit another triple to extend the lead to 13, and the run was capped off with an old fashioned three-point play from Jocelyn.
TCNJ's hot shooting continued in the first half. Egan made another three-pointer which put the Lions ahead, 32-13, with 7:39 to play in the first half. Walko then set up Jensen who dialed long distance. A couple of possessions later, Walko converted a three-pointer to push the lead to 38-13. TCNJ took its biggest lead of the first when Egan made his third trey to bump the edge to 41-13. A lay-up and a free throw at the end of the half from Jocelyn gave TCNJ a 51-27 advantage. The Lions shot 18-of-33 (54.5%) from the field and 12-of-20 (60%) from three-point range in the first half.
In the second half, the Lions continued to control the pace of the game. Kean was able to get as close as 71-55 with 8:19 remaining, yet TCNJ quickly built the lead to 26. Jocelyn hit a lay-up and a three-pointer to put TCNJ ahead, 78-58. Buckets from Bodine, Jocelyn, and Walko gave the Lions an 84-58 lead.
Walko led the Lions once again with 24 points. He had a strong all-around game with seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals. The seven rebounds put Walko over 500 for his career. He became the 12
th player in TCNJ history to reach that milestone. Walko also moved into seventh place all-time in scoring in TCNJ history. He now has 1,421 points in his career, and passed Ralph Brateris for seventh in program history.
Jocelyn scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jensen tallied 13 points with seven rebounds, while Bodine scored a career-high 11 points off the bench.
P.J. Ringel spread the ball around well and picked up nine assists. Ringel additionally scored six points and grabbed five rebounds.
TCNJ kept pace with Stockton for first place in the conference standings. The Ospreys pulled out an overtime win against Montclair State on Saturday. The Lions have clinched a first-round bye in the NJAC tournament, and will host a semifinal game on Feb. 26.
The regular season finale awaits TCNJ on Feb. 19. The Lions will travel to William Paterson for an 8:00 p.m. tip.
