No. 19 Softball Enjoys Successful Opening Day

SALISBURY, MD. –
The No. 19 TCNJ softball team enjoyed a good start to the 2020 season on Sunday. The Lions defeated Rochester, 5-4, in game one. TCNJ was leading Salisbury, 5-0, in game two before the game was halted due to darkness.

In game one, the Lions got on top in the first inning with three runs. Camryn Davies drove in the first run with a fielder's choice. Megan Mayernik scored on a wild pitch, then Davies came around to score on an error.

Starting pitcher Alanna Namit found a groove and held off Rochester's offense. She allowed only two hits over three innings. TCNJ took a 4-0 lead when Annalise Suitovsky scored on a fielding error in the third inning.

Lauren Conroy made it a 5-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Rochester mounted a late comeback with three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. Rochester had runners on second and third in the seventh inning, yet Eliza Sweet was able to clinch the victory for the Lions. She recorded the final out with a fly out to grab the win for TCNJ.

In game two, TCNJ took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Katie Winchock knocked in a pair of runs with a single. The Lions added two more runs in the fourth inning with an Elyse Nardozza base hit.

Conroy knocked in a run with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 5-0. The game was halted in the bottom of the sixth inning due to darkness. Sweet pitched a strong game in the circle. She allowed only four hits and struck out five batters.

Mayernik went 3-6 on the day. Winchock went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. 

TCNJ's game against Salisbury will be resumed when the Lions meet the Sea Gulls on March 8. TCNJ will return to action on Feb. 29 for the home opener. The Lions will face NYU and FDU-Florham as part of a tripleheader.
