Men's Basketball Picks up Road Win Against Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – The TCNJ men's basketball team won its 11th straight meeting with Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday. The Lions downed the Scarlet Raptors by a final score of 77-64. With the victory, TCNJ pushed its record to 13-8 including 10-4 in NJAC play. Rutgers-Camden fell to 7-14 and 4-10 in the conference.

The Scarlet Raptors jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, but the Lions recorded the next five points. Ryan Jensen scored on a lay-up, then Mike Walley made a three-pointer. With 10:08 to play in the opening half, Anthony DiCaro drained a trifecta to give TCNJ a 14-12 edge.

Jason Larranaga scored five points in a row to put the Lions ahead, 23-14, with 4:31 left in the first half. Walley hit again from three-point territory, then Randall Walko scored on a lay-up that pushed the lead to 32-19 with 1:18 left in the first. DiCaro knocked down another three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the half to put TCNJ ahead, 35-21.

Early in the second half, Jensen struck from beyond the arc after he took a nice feed from P.J. Ringel to put TCNJ ahead by 13. The Lions' defense got a stop on the Scarlet Raptors' next possession, and on the ensuing trip down the floor Travis Jocelyn scored from in close. His bucket extended the TCNJ advantage to 45-30.

Jensen found a groove on the offensive end, as he made two more three-pointers. His third one of the second half bumped TCNJ's lead to 53-39 with 14:05 remaining. Rutgers-Camden cut the deficit to single digits with 9:33 to play, but the Lions quickly pushed their lead back to 17.

Jocelyn made a three-pointer to put TCNJ up, 58-47. On the next Scarlet Raptor possession, Walko came up with a block. He turned the strong defense into instant offense, as he converted on a lay-up. Walko was also fouled, and he made the free throw to put the Lions ahead, 61-47.

The next trip down the floor, Tommy Egan registered a steal on the defensive end. Egan took it down the court and sank a three-pointer to extend the edge to 64-47 with 7:57 to play. The Scarlet Raptors hung around and did not let TCNJ run away, however the Lions proved to be too much and held onto the conference victory.

Jocelyn and Walko each scored a team-high 17 points. Jocelyn only missed once, as he shot 6-of-7 from the floor including 3-of-4 from three-point range. He also added seven rebounds. Walko pulled down eight rebounds, and shot 7-of-14 from the field. Jensen scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and he added nine boards.

The Lions posted efficient shooting numbers of 30-for-55 (54.5%) from the field, and 12-of-27 (44.4%) from three-point range. TCNJ held a 21-3 edge in bench points.

TCNJ has controlled this head-to-head series recently. The Lions now own a 19-8 record against the Scarlet Raptors dating back to the 2006-07 season. Rutgers-Camden last came out on top against TCNJ on Nov. 25, 2014.

Next up for TCNJ is a home game against Ramapo on Feb. 8. That will also be the Lions' senior day.
