EWING, N.J. -
Justin Dominique's brace delivered the TCNJ men's soccer team a stirring 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Rutgers-Camden in a critical NJAC tilt on Wednesday night.
The junior's latest goal-scoring outburst was vital for the Lions (6-7-1, 3-2-1), who began the evening in fifth place in the NJAC standings. The top-six teams qualify for the conference tournament. TCNJ extended its winning streak to three matches and improved to 4-1 at Lions Stadium this season.
Rutgers-Camden (6-6-2, 2-4) needed less than five minutes to put the Lions in an early hole, as Kyle Norton's long-range laser ricocheted off the right post and into the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.
TCNJ equalized with 11:20 to play in the first half, when
Luke Pascarella's pinpoint through ball split a pair of defenders and found the feet of Dominique, who slid a shot just under the visitors' on-rushing keeper.
The hosts served immediate notice after intermission, with
Mike Garofalo ringing the outside of the post with a right-footed rocket just 30 seconds after the resumption of play. About eight minutes later,
Timmy Suchora's free header off a corner by
Ryan Phillips went just over the crossbar.
The Lions' persistence paid off in the 64th minute. Phillips delivered a corner towards the edge of the box toÂ
Joseph Schlageter, who headed it towards goal for a back-header by Dominique, who managed to loft the ball over the head of the Rutgers-Camden keeper. The Scarlet Raptors threatened a couple times in the final stages but were unable to find an equalizer.
Dominique increased his team-leading goal tally to eight with his second two-goal effort of the fall, while Pascarella's assist marked his team-high fourth. Schlageter's helper was the first of his career.
Julian Franco made two saves to earn the win for the Lions, who were outshot 13-10 but held a 7-6 edge in corners.
TCNJ returns to action on Saturday to face Pratt Institute. First touch is set for 1 p.m. at Lions Stadium.Â
