BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 1 TCNJ women's soccer team's matchup with No. 2 Johns Hopkins lived up to its billing, with the nation's top-ranked powers battling to a 2-2 stalemate in Baltimore.
Julia Obst and
Gianna Coppola found the back of the net for the Lions (13-0-1), who extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 26 consecutive matches.
Coming into Wednesday's titanic tilt, TCNJ had allowed two goals all season. The Lions had not conceded more than eight shots in any match, and goalie
Alexandra Panasuk had not needed to make more than three saves. The high-powered Blue Jays put that sparkling defensive record to the test and then some.
Hopkins (11-0-2) piled up 25 shots and nine corner kicks on the afternoon, but the Lions were nevertheless in the driver's seat on the scoreboard for much of the affair.
Obst staked the No. 1 squad in Division III to an early lead, finishing a feed from
Amelia Curtis in front to snatch a 1-0 advantage in the 12
th minute. Obst chased down a long ball and got around the keeper, chesting the ball down for an open-net finish.
Panasuk made five first-half saves to preserve the Lions' edge, and the visitors came out on the front foot in the second stanza. Obst,
Ava Garay, Coppola, and
Sophie Vieira all drew saves from the Johns Hopkins goalkeeper in the first 15 minutes of the period, but it was the Blue Jays who pulled even on a goal by Bonnie Shea in the 65
th minute.
Undaunted, TCNJ went back in front in the 74
th minute as Coppola scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season on an incredible individual effort, manuevering the ball to her left foot and sending a curling shot into the top right corner of the netting from a difficult angle.
Hoping to see out the final quarter-hour, the Lions conceded another equalizer just six minutes and change later, when Emma Bocanegra drove home a loose ball following a long cross to the far post.
Obst nearly won it in the first minute of overtime, but saw her potential golden goal crash off the crossbar. Both goaltenders were called upon to make multiple saves in the two extra sessions, and each was up to the task as the teams settled for a hard-earned point apiece.
Ivonne Vazquez led the Lions with five shots – three on goal – and was one of seven players with multiple shots. Panasuk totaled a season-high eight saves, while her Blue Jay counterpart Caitlin Hendricks made 11.
TCNJ returns to NJAC play on Saturday at Kean.
