Wrestling on Top After Day 1 at York

YORK, Pa. – A dozen members of the No. 12 TCNJ wrestling team advanced to the quarterfinals and many others remain alive in the consolation rounds in a solid first-day effort at York's 12th annual New Standard Corporation Invitational on Friday.

Ryan Rosenthal (125), Jake Giordano (133), Kyle Nase (133), Mike Conklin (141), Domenic Difrancescantonio (141), Matt Surich (165), Reid Colella (174), Alfonso Pinto Jr. (184), Dan Surich (184), Quinn Haddad (197), Thomas Marretta (285), and Peter Wersinger (285) all reached the quarterfinals of their respective brackets for the Lions, who ended the night atop a loaded field with 38.5 team points.

Averett was in second place with 36.5 points, with Johnson and Wales right behind at 35. Washington and Lee (28) was fourth, followed by Stevens (25), Ithaca (24.5), Brockport (23.5), Johns Hopkins (23), York (23), and Ursinus (19) in the top-10.

Rosenthal made a first-period takedown stand up in a 2-0 win over Ursinus' Alex Tenaglia.

At 133, Giordano advanced with an 8-2 over Nick DeSola of Johnson and Wales, and Nase joined him in the quarters after an 8-3 defeat of Apprentice School's Jacob Seale.

Difrancescantonio needed just 14 seconds to pin Wesley Tosto of Ursinus, and Conklin won by first-period fall against York's Bryan Diaz.

Matt Surich worked his way into the quarterfinals thanks to a last-second takedown, edging past Brockport's Matt Kline by a 6-4 margin.

Colella notched a second-period pin against York's Kyle Strazdus to book his spot in the quarters.

Dan Surich easily dispatched Sheldon Davis of Averett, racking up 12 near-fall points en route to an 18-1 technical fall. His teammate Pinto defeated Johns Hopkins' Elliott Lee, 14-7, before holding off Averett's Zion Carpenter for a massive 4-3 victory over the top-ranked wrestler in the Southeast Region.

Haddad pinned Trevor Lintz of York in 1:52.

The Lions' heavyweight duo was dominant. Thomas Marretta pinned W&L's Tade Omisore in just over a minute, while Peter Wersinger picked up a technical fall, 17-2, over Ursinus' Jake Ahmad.

Nick Denora grabbed his first win of the season in the 125-pound consolation bracket, cruising to an 11-1 major decision opposite Apprentice's Kris Smith.

Larry Melchionda remains in the 133-pound consolations. He defeated Josh Carpenter of York by 11-2 major in the first round.

Drake Torrington piled up 14 near-fall points during a 16-0 technical fall against Apprentice's Drew Porter in his consolation opener at 141.

Steven Schwab progressed in the consolations at 149 with a 13-6 defeat of JWU's Matthew Garcia. Connor Doherty is also alive, advancing by forfeit in his first back-draw bout.

Alex Amato remains alive at 157, where he pinned Ithaca's Dan Motta before falling to Averett's Thomas Baldwin by a 6-0 count in the second round. In his first consolation match, he downed Alan Choback of York by 11-1 major.

Nick Sacco won his first-round match at 165, 7-3 over Stevens' James Snyder, before dropping a 12-4 decision to JWU's Steven Ocampo. He bounced back by pinning Brockport's Jonah Poueriet in the second period of his first consolation bout.

Jack Murray (165) and Nick Golden (174) each won a first-round match before dropping their next two. Murray rallied for a 4-3 win in the first round with a late takedown, and Golden used four near-fall points in the third to nip Brockport's Jared Zenie.

Joe Daddario dominated Johns Hopkins' Noah Graber at 184, not letting the match get out of the first period before he had 14 near-fall points and a pin in 2:24.
