Women’s Basketball Tops Kean to Match Best Start Since 2002-03

UNION, N.J. – The TCNJ women's basketball team stayed undefeated with a 67-38 win over Kean on Friday night. The Lions improved to 5-0 which matches the program's best start since the 2002-03 season.

Shannon Devitt surpassed 900 career rebounds in the victory. The senior forward now has 911 rebounds and became only the second Lion to reach the 900-rebound plateau. Candy Kaschak owns the program's record with 962 boards.

A 14-4 second quarter advantage gave TCNJ control of the game and a 35-16 halftime lead.

The Cougars began the game with a 5-0 spurt, however the Lions roared back with a 12-0 run. Elle Cimilluca started the scoring with a three-pointer then converted a fast-break lay-up. On the next possession, Julia Setaro hit a three-pointer to give the Lions a three-point edge. Buckets from Devitt and Setaro completed the early first-quarter run.

Izzy Leazier and Devitt each knocked down a jumper to give the Lions a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, the Cougars shrank the lead to 10 with 7:51 to play in the half, however the Lions ended the half with an 11-2 stretch.

A pair of assists from Leazier led to buckets from Devitt and Morgan Heller. Heller's lay-up gave TCNJ a 32-14 lead with 4:24 left in the half. Sydney Blum drained a three-pointer off of a Cimilluca assist to give the Lions the 19-point halftime lead.

TCNJ controlled the game in the second half and did not let Kean back into it. The Cougars did not pull any closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Devitt led all scorers with 19 points and added a double-double with 12 boards. She now has 45 double-doubles during her established career.

Setaro scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the three-point line. Cimilluca racked up nine assists to go with six points.

The stingy Lions' defense held Kean to 22.2% shooting from the field and just 5% shooting from the three-point line.

The Lions and Cougars will complete the home-and-home series tomorrow in Packer Hall.
