EWING, N.J. – In the quarterfinals of the NJAC Championship Tournament, the TCNJ women's basketball team defeated Stockton by a final score of 67-47.
The Lions advance to the NJAC Semifinals for the fourth year in a row. TCNJ, the No. 2 seed, will host the No. 3 seed New Jersey City on March 12. The win also kept TCNJ unbeaten in the 2021 season. The Lions record now stands at an unblemished 9-0, while the Ospreys finish the season at 1-5.
TCNJ wasted no time taking control of the game and raced out to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter. With 2:40 left to play in the first,
Julia Setaro scored an old-fashioned three-point play to put TCNJ ahead, 14-5. On the next Lions' possession,
Izzy Leazier knocked down a three-pointer. A pair of lay-ups from
Sydney Blum and
Jane Beiermeister extended the lead to 21-5 with 55 seconds left in the first quarter.
A trifecta from Setaro gave the Lions a 26-7 lead two minutes into the second quarter. Setaro has shot the three-pointer well this season. Coming into today's game, she ranked eighth in the nation in three-point shooting with a mark of 58.6%. She finished the afternoon with 14 points.
TCNJ held a 36-17 lead at halftime and kept the Ospreys at bay in the second half. Stockton did not come within less than 17 points the rest of the way.
Shannon Devitt tallied her 49
th career double-double with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward also blocked five shots on the afternoon. Devitt is now only three rebounds away from tying TCNJ's all-time career rebounding record. Candy Kaschack currently holds the program record with 962 boards.
Elle Cimilluca scored seven points and dished out six assists. She also tallied three steals. Blum, Leazier, and
Natalie Miller all scored six points. Beiermeister recorded nine rebounds and three assists.
A strong defensive effort from the Lions helped pave the way to victory. TCNJ limited Stockton to 21% (14-of-67) shooting from the floor. Coming into today's game, the Lions were the NJAC's leader in opposing field goal percentage, holding the opposition to just 32.6% shooting from the floor. That also ranks 35
th in the nation.
