EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ softball team improved to 9-1 in NJAC play with a doubleheader sweep over Montclair State on Saturday. The Lions dominated to earn the sweep, with a 10-0 win in game one and a 10-2 victory in game two. The Red Hawks fell to 6-4 and 5-3 in conference action.
Game One:
The Lions used an eight-run fourth inning to blow the game open and clinch the eight-run rule. In the first inning,
Lauren Conroy blasted a two-run home run to center field.
The big inning was started with an RBI single off the bat of
Lindsay Zengel. A sacrifice bunt from
Kaci Neveling pushed Zengel to third, yet the out was the second of the inning. TCNJ then used a huge two-out rally to finish the game.
Allie Immerso drove in Zengel with an RBI double, then
Julia Mayernik ripped a two-run home run to center to make it 6-0. RBI doubles from
Julia Kinnally and
Jaclyn Carifi extended the lead to eight, then a pinch-hit single off the bat of
Victoria Aspiazu drove in a pair and put a 10-spot on the board for the Lions.
Eliza Sweet threw a complete-game shutout in the circle. Sweet was effective, as she only walked one batter and allowed just three singles. The senior right-hander improved to 2-2 on the season with today's win.
Game Two:
Montclair State jumped out to an early two-run lead with a Kayla Gallo homer in the first, yet it was all Lions after that. TCNJ countered with an RBI double off the bat of Conroy in the first inning to cut the lead in half.
The Lions used another two-out rally to gain the lead in the second inning. Neveling drove in a pair with a double, then Immerso knocked her in to stretch the lead to 4-2.
After the two Red Hawk runs in the first inning, TCNJ starting pitcher
Alanna Namit shut down the Montclair offense. Namit allowed only one hit, which was a single, during the rest of the game.
Three more runs in the fourth inning extended TCNJ's lead to 7-2. Carifi drove in two with a double, then
Katie Winchock knocked a base hit up the middle to make it a four-run lead. An RBI double off the bat of Immerso scored Winchock to put the Lions ahead by five.
Immerso put the exclamation point on the win by belting a three-run walk-off home run that bounced off the scoreboard in the sixth inning. It marked her first home run of her career, and the round-tripper gave TCNJ a 10-2 edge, good enough for the eight-run rule to finish the game.
Namit struck out five batters on the day, and improved to 5-0 with the win.
The Lions will travel to Rowan on April 20 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
