GLASSBORO, N.J. – The 18
th-ranked TCNJ softball team split with Rowan in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions took a low-scoring pitcher's dual by a 2-0 final score in game one, then fell in game two by an 8-2 final. The Lions handed the Profs their first NJAC loss of the season in game one.
TCNJ now stands at 11-3 on the year including 10-2 in conference action, while the Profs became 19-5 and 13-1 in conference play.
Game One:
Eliza Sweet had a terrific start, shutting down the Profs' bats and throwing six shutout innings. She struck out six hitters, didn't walk any, and surrendered only three hits. Rowan's offense led the NJAC in runs, hits, and RBIs coming into today's games.
TCNJ broke through in the top of the sixth inning to end the shutout and get on the scoreboard.
Lauren Conroy led off the inning with a double. Two batters later,
Elyse Nardozza delivered the clutch RBI with a base hit, and Conroy motored around third to score.
The Lions tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Kaci Neveling legged out an infield single, then
Julia Mayernik and Conroy each worked a walk. Pinch hitter
Kayla Hillenbrand earned a tough RBI as she was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to extend the lead to 2-0.
Ally Schlee entered in relief of Sweet in the seventh inning after the Profs led off with a base hit. Schlee earned three groundouts to tally her second save of the season and clinch the Lions' win. Sweet improved to 3-2 this season with the victory.
Game Two:
TCNJ took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Jaclyn Carifi led off with a triple, then
Katie Winchock knocked her in with a single two batters later. Carifi earned an RBI on a bases loaded infield single in the third inning.
A pair of solo home runs drew Rowan even in the bottom half of the third inning. The Profs controlled the game from there with three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Alanna Namit took the loss in the circle, which was her first of the year. Namit recorded six strikeouts and now stands at 5-1 on the season.
On the afternoon, Neveling went 4-8 with two runs scored. Conroy was walked seven times on the day, and was 1-1 with a run scored. Carifi went 3-6 with one RBI and one run scored, while Winchock went 2-5 with an RBI.
Next up for TCNJ is a home doubleheader against NJCU on Saturday.
