EWING, N.J. –The TCNJ softball team powered their way to a doubleheader sweep over New Jersey City on Saturday. The Lions won game one by a 16-0 final score and game two by an 18-0 tally. TCNJ's record now stands at 13-3 on the season including 12-2 in conference action.
Game One:
Eliza Sweet pitched a perfect game in game one. The senior right-hander was almost untouchable, as she tallied 13 out of 15 outs via the strikeout. The perfect game and no-hitter mark the first of her career. Sweet was part of a combined no-hitter in 2020. She is now 24-9 on her career and had a 2.51 ERA entering today's game.
The Lions threw a three-spot up on the board in the first inning.
Lauren Conroy knocked the first in with an RBI double, then
Elyse Nardozza drove in Conroy with a base hit.
Julia Mayernik's RBI double scored Nardozza to make it a 3-0 game.
TCNJ added three runs in the third, then blew the game open with 10 in the fourth inning. The Lions scored seven runs before the first out of the fourth inning was made. The big rally was highlighted by RBI doubles from
Julia Vardiman,
Maggie Smyth, and a three-run blast from
Victoria Aspiazu. The home run was the first of Aspiazu's career.
Game Two:
In the tail end of the doubleheader, the Lions picked up right where they left off with seven runs in the first inning. The first run came from Conroy, who laced an RBI single up the middle that scored
Allie Immerso. After TCNJ pushed the lead to 3-0, Vardiman connected on a two-RBI single, then
Katie Winchock drove in a pair with a double down the left field line to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
In the circle for TCNJ was
Ally Schlee, who was effective to earn her third win of the season. Schlee went four shutout innings and allowed only three hits.
Gillian Roberts finished the game with a clean one-two-three fifth inning.
A two-RBI double from
Jaclyn Carifi stretched the lead to 9-0 in the second inning. TCNJ kept the foot on the gas pedal with three runs in the second, five in the third, and three runs in the fourth inning.
Next up for TCNJ is a trip to Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday with game one slated to start at 3:00 p.m.
