EWING, N.J. – TCNJ head men's basketball coach
Matt Goldsmith earned his 100
th career victory in TCNJ's 72-47 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night. Goldsmith becomes the third coach to win at least 100 games as the Lions' head man, joining John Castaldo (200 wins) and Kevin Bannon (145 wins).
The Lions jumped on the Scarlet Raptors quickly and never trailed. The Lions used an 11-0 run to take a 21-4 lead over Rutgers-Camden just six minutes into play.
Danny Bodine,
Matthew Okorie and
Anthony DiCaro all hit three pointers on the run.
Camden reversed the trend, though, with a 16-3 run of its own. Andrew Walker's three pointer with 7:16 left in the first half cut the TCNJ lead to 24-20. The margin never shrunk into single-possession territory, though, as TCNJ scored the next seven points from Bodine, Okorie and DiCaro, once again.
Bodine led all scorers with 20 points, and he just missed a double-double by a single rebound. He also had four assists and four blocks to go along with his nine rebounds. DiCaro had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Okorie had eight points and eight rebounds.
TCNJ held a 40-26 advantage at the intermission while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 6-for-15 from three-point range in the first half.
The Lions' defense picked up the pressure in the second half. Rutgers-Camden went ice cold from the field, make just one shot in a span of more than 10 minutes. In that span, the TCNJ lead went from 45-35 to 66-39.
Camden shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the second half and 33.3 percent for the game. After making six three pointers in the first half, the Scarlet Raptors went just 1-for-11 in the second half.
Jason Larranaga had 11 points with three makes from beyond the arc.
Jim Clemente led the Lions with 11 rebounds. TCNJ crushed Rutgers-Camden on the boards, 48-18.
Goldsmith has been TCNJ's head coach since the 2015-16 season and hasn't suffered a losing season during his tenure. The Lions have qualified for the NJAC tournament in his first six seasons, making the final in his first season and winning the title in 2020. TCNJ defeated Marietta in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that season, its first win in the national tournament since 1989.
TCNJ returns to action on Saturday at New Jersey City.
