No. 13 Montclair State Defeats No. 12 Women’s Soccer, 3-2

EWING, N.J. – The No. 12 TCNJ women's soccer team celebrated its 10 seniors prior to Saturday night's match against No. 13 Montclair State, but the Red Hawks escaped Lions Stadium with a 3-2 victory. After falling behind, 3-0, TCNJ scored twice in the final 12 minutes to nearly pull off a great comeback.

In the second half, Victoria D'Imperio scored in the 78th minute to cut the MSU lead to 3-1. D'Imperio is on quite an offensive hot streak, scoring goals in each of the past six games. Lindsay O'Keefe centered a pass from the right end line to D'Imperio in the box. She beat MSU keeper Haley Martin to the left, grazing the post on its way into the net.

In the 87th minute, Ava Curtis bombed a shot from about 35 yards out that beat Martin high, showcasing the sophomore's strong leg and scoring touch. It made the final three minutes interesting and exciting, but the Lions could not find the equalizer before time expired.

TCNJ controlled play for several stretches throughout the contest, and the Lions had their best chance of the first half about 10 minutes into play when Sophie Vieira hit a thunderous shot from about 30 yards out on the left side. It hit the crossbar and bounced high and out of danger.

A foul in the box in the 39th minute allowed Montclair State to take a 1-0 lead on Aileen Cahill's penalty kick.

With that score still intact, Gianna Coppola snuck a ball into the box in the first minute of the second half on an attempt for D'Imperio, but it was a little too far ahead. A few minutes later, Vieira had another strong shot that she ripped high.

The first 10 minutes of second half belonged almost entirely to TCNJ, but the score still remained 1-0 MSU. A quick transition by Kimberly Campbell in the 57th minute led to her first goal of the game to make it 2-0. She added her second tally just four minutes later to expand the lead to 3-0.

TCNJ outshot Montclair, 24-7, and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. D'Imperio led the team with six shots, and Emma Pascarella had five.

The 10 seniors honored included Anya Helmer, Kristina Ng, Ivonne Vasquez, Jess DiMatteo, Gianna Coppola, Lindsay O'Keefe, Gianna Minerva, Ava Garay, Emma Pascarella and Jessica O'Brien.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday at Rowan at 6 p.m.
