GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 18 TCNJ women's soccer team tied No. 20 Rowan on Wednesday night in the Lions' second consecutive game against a ranked opponent.
The Lions outshot Rowan, 20-7, in the game while holding a 9-4 advantage in penalty kicks. Both teams did have chances throughout, but the Lions controlled play through the first half. TCNJ held a 10-0 advantage in first-half shots.
Six minutes into play, Gianna Coppola and Emma Pascarella went back-and-forth with a touch-and-go play. Pascarella passed from the right to Coppola in the center, but her shot was saved by Rowan keeper Calista Burke.
Sophie Vieira had a great run down the left side in the 20th minute, showcasing her speed as she navigated wide around defenders. She centered a pass to Pascarella that drifted toward the net, but Pascarella's one-timer was stopped by a sliding Burke as she came out to cut down the angle.
In the second half, Pascarella took a corner kick for TCNJ in the 57th minute, and the ball bounced around in the box. Lindsay O'Keefe couldn't quite put a good foot on it and it skidded wide.
Just before that, Rowan nearly scored when a shot to the far post sliced just wide and out of bounds. Rowan also hit a cross bar with 12 minutes left, but that was their best chance against Corinne Byrum. She earned the shutout for TCNJ with a couple of saves.
Coppola led the Lions' attack with four shots. Gianna Minerva had three. Both players shared the team lead with two shots on goal.
TCNJ returns to action at New Jersey City on Saturday at 1 p.m.
