EWING, N.J. – Led by a brilliant offensive display from sophomore
Rayhanah Ahmed, the TCNJ field hockey team produced their fifth shutout win of the season, beating Moravian at home, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
Finishing with two goals and an assist on the day, Ahmed spearheaded a dominant Lions offense which produced 23 total shots (16 on goal) and 11 penalty corners. The sophomore was aided by senior
Jess Hatch, who scored her team-leading 6
th goal on the season and set a new career high in both shots (9) and shots on goal (6). On the other side of the field, TCNJ (5-5) held the Greyhounds (4-7) to only three total shot attempts and just one penalty corner the entire game.
The first Lions score on the day struck early, when Ahmed connected with Hatch for the score on a penalty corner only 2:12 minutes into the match.
Late in the second period, TCNJ tacked on another goal following an Ahmed steal near midfield that resulted in
Claire Engebreth awarding her defensive efforts by finding Ahmed in the shooting circle for a backhanded shoot and score.
The Lions entered the half with an 11-1 edge in shots and a 7-1 corners edge.
TCNJ's third goal came almost as quickly as the third quarter started. Having received a pass on the left side, Ahmed maneuvered her way through the Moravian defense to the center of the shooting circle and found the back of the cage after shooting the ball past the reach of Greyhound's goalie. The score stopped the clock only 26 seconds into the half.
The sophomore's performance shot her up the team rankings on the season, placing her tied for first in assists (3), second in points (11) and goals (4), all despite missing three games earlier in the season.
Also for the Lions, freshman
Sydney Sieja saw her first career shot attempt, finishing with three in the game (two on goal).
The Greyhounds were led by goalie Brooke Wilkinson, who finished with 13 saves. Maddie Call recorded Moravian's lone shot on target.
Following the win, TCNJ will return to conference play this Saturday as they visit No. 6 Kean at 1 p.m.
