BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The TCNJ women's basketball team went the distance to secure an impressive road victory on Saturday, outlasting Moravian in a 66-64 overtime classic.
Nina Branchizio poured in a game-high 24 points and drilled a six-pack of 3-pointers for the Lions (3-2), who picked up their first road win of the year in nail-biting fashion. The entire game was played within a single-digit spread, and neither side outscored the other by more than two points in a quarter.
TCNJ took its largest lead of the afternoon on a bucket by
Emily Toy that made it 47-38 late in the third quarter, but the Greyhounds (2-3) scored the last seven points of the frame to close within a pair.
The Lions threatened to separate again early in the fourth, when
Sydney Blum connected on a triple and Toy scored in the paint to open up a 52-45 advantage. The visitors led by seven again (55-48) on a 3-pointer by Branchizio with 5:37 remaining, but back came Moravian with a 10-2 burst to take the lead at 58-57 with 2:11 to play.
Blum came through with a huge trey on the next possession to give the upper hand back to the Lions, but Sam Osorio answered on the other end with a tying basket. Neither side was able to dent the scoreboard for the final 98 seconds of regulation, including multiple last-possession chances for the Greyhounds, and the game went to an extra five minutes.
Kayla Yoegel scored the first points of overtime on a short jumper to make it 62-60, but that was the last lead for the hosts. Toy answered immediately with the go-ahead 3-pointer, and
Izzy Leazier added to it with three free throws over the next two trips to make it 66-62.
Moravian got within two on a pair of Yoegel free throws with 1:44 left in overtime, but once again the final 100 seconds proved fruitless for both sides and the Lions managed to escape as Katie Fricker came up with a huge steal on the Greyhounds' last possession.
Branchizio was 9-of-18 overall and 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, tacking on six rebounds and three assists to her huge scoring output. Julie Setaro (12 points) and Leazier (10) joined her in double figures, the latter also tallying six rebounds and three assists.
Blum (eight points, six rebounds) and Toy (seven points, four boards, four assists) offered important contributions, and Fricker pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. TCNJ held a 44-39 edge on the glass for the afternoon.
Yoegel finished with 20 points and Tessa Zamolyi paired 14 points with 13 rebounds but struggled to a 5-for-17 effort from the field against the Lions' tough interior defense.
Moravian attempted 20 more shots than the Lions, but was held to 33.3 percent from the field (24 for 72). TCNJ was a sizzling 13-for-26 from 3-point range, making 10 more triples than the Greyhounds to counter the hosts' 36-18 advantage in paint points.
The Lions wrap up a three-game road swing and open NJAC play at Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday night.
