Engebreth Lifts Field Hockey Past Kean in Overtime Thriller

EWING, N.J. – A clutch score from Claire Engebreth helped the TCNJ field hockey team clinch a 4-3 overtime victory over Kean in the NJAC semifinals at home Wednesday afternoon.

With the walk-off win, the second-seeded Lions advanced to the NJAC championship, where they will take on top-seeded and third-ranked Rowan at 6 p.m. Saturday night in Glassboro.

With the game tied at in overtime at the 65th minute mark, Engebreth called game by tapping in the game-winning goal off a Jess Hatch pass through a scrum of Kean defenders. The goal capped off a wild back-and-forth match that saw the Lions (12-5) jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half before Kean (14-4) stormed back to tie the game in the final two minutes of regulation.

Super senior Sophie Popp struck first for the Lions with just a little over four minutes into the game on a penalty corner. After crossing over her defender, Popp launched a shot that sailed past the reach of Kean's goalie.

The second goal for the Lions was scored five minutes later by junior Sophia Foschini, whose shot bounced off a Kean defender's stick and straight into the cage. She was assisted by senior Kileigh Pfluger, who now has six on the season.

Foschini's second goal of the game came at the 25th minute mark of the game, in which she tapped in the ball from the right side of the goal after receiving a pinpoint pass from Hatch. The score made it 3-0 for the Lions.

Kean rallied back minutes later, however, scoring back-to-back goals with just 19 seconds of each other that cut the Lions' lead to just one heading into intermission. After an unassisted goal from Morgan Stump, Ja'Carra Jackson knocked in a score off a Peyton Mann pass in transition that just avoided Lions goalie Dani Britton.

The Lions entered intermission nearly doubling the Cougars in shots (9-5) and held a 5-2 penalty corners edge.

The second half of the game proved largely to be a defensive battle, with both teams shutting each other out until the 59th minute mark, when Mann scored the game-tying goal off a breakaway, and sending the game into overtime.

The Lions had to survive a nervy finish as Kean earned a penalty corner with time elapsed in regulation. Rayhanah Ahmed came through, deflecting a pass and clearing the ball to safety to prevent a potential game-winner for the Cougars.

The game proved to be a physical one, as nine total penalty cards were handed out, including four yellow cards in the second half.

For the Lions, Hatch had a career-high seven shots on goal. Ahmed had a superb defensive performance and finished with five total shots.
