EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team awoke from its winter hibernation with a hard-fought victory over University of the Sciences on Saturday afternoon, pulling out four tight matches in singles play to post an 8-1 victory over the Division II Devils.
Doubles was a breeze for the Lions (2-0), who dropped just eight games across the three courts.
Charlotte Roarty and
Jenny Landells, fresh off a 13
th-place finish at the ITA Cup in the winter, picked up an 8-3 victory on the top court.
Alexa Vasile and
Chase Eisenberg, undefeated together a year ago, remained perfect together with an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles, while
Anusha Rangu and
Aira Abalos rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 in their first appearance as partners.
The drama ratcheted up in singles play, where TCNJ was pushed to the brink on three of the top four courts.
Roarty outlasted Charlotte Kordonowy in a 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 battle on the top court, and Abalos needed a first-set tiebreaker to edge Kirsten Wijnsema by a 7-6 (3), 6-4 count at No. 2.
Vasile got the best of Rosemary Esquivel in the match of the day, prevailing in an 11-9 thriller in a third-set super breaker at No. 3.
Rangu won a tiebreaker in the first set and a super breaker in the third to score a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-4 defeat of Stephanie Mazurek at No. 4.
Eisenberg had the easiest time of it for the Lions, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
The Lions get right back to the court on Sunday when they take on Division I Lafayette at Tennis Zone in Quakertown.
