QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The TCNJ men's tennis team capped an exceptional opening weekend with a scintillating 4-3 victory over Division I Lafayette on Sunday.
Less than 24 hours after a season-opening victory over Division II University of the Sciences,
Nick Matkiwsky's triumph at No. 4 singles handed the Lions (2-0) another up-division victim.
TCNJ made quick work of doubles play, which was worth only one team point instead of the customary three.
Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain routed their counterparts at No. 1 by a 6-2 score line, and
Derek Jordan and
Nikola Kilibarda produced a 6-4 win at No. 3. Matkiwsky and
Akul Telluri made it a clean sweep by pulling out a 7-5 result at No. 2.
The Leopards claimed the top two singles courts, although Michibata was a point away from victory at No. 1 before conceding a 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 barnburner.
Adrian Tsui handily dispatched his opponent at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Jordan was awarded a walk-over after his adversary retired in the first set with Jordan holding a 4-1 advantage.
That left only one court for victory, and Matkiwsky came through with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 effort at No. 4.
Dorian Makarski pushed his Lafayatte foe to the brink at No. 5 before coming up on the short end of a 10-6 super breaker.
The Lions hit the courts next Saturday with a home match against Vassar.
