HOPEWELL, N.J. – Nikola Kilibarda staved off three match points and pulled out an epic tilt at No. 3 singles to hand the TCNJ men's tennis team a walk-off 5-4 victory over Vassar in a non-conference thriller on Saturday night at Hopewell Tennis Center.
The Lions, who remained perfect on the spring at 3-0, led 2-1 after doubles.
Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain dominated their opponents on the No. 1 court by an 8-2 count, and Kilibarda teamed with
Nick Matkiwsky for an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
The Brewers (2-2), though, hit back by taking the third doubles court and were victorious on three of the first five singles matchups to leave the court, including a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision for Jay Wong over Michibata on the top court.
In between, Wain rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 rout at No. 2 singles and
Adrian Tsui continued his unbeaten singles run with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at number four.
That left it all to Kilibarda on the third court, where the TCNJ senior dropped the first set, 7-5. He came back to take the second by the same score, but Vassar's Benjamin Almquist went ahead 5-2 in the third. Kilibarda snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, fighting off three clinching points for Almquist and getting the third set into a tiebreaker, which he took by a 7-2 score.
The Lions get right back to it on Sunday when they welcome Oneonta to the TCNJ Rec Center.
