ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Kyle Nase and
Peter Wersinger each won individual titles as the TCNJ wrestling team's reserves put in an impressive performance at the Mideast Futures Tournament on Sunday.
Joe Daddario earned a runner-up finish at 184 and
James Romaine placed fourth at 165 for the Lions.
Nase continued an impressive rookie campaign with a comfortable run through the 133-pound bracket. He posted a 13-5 major decision over Stevens' Arjun Khatri and defeated RIT's Clay Rankin, 7-1, before rolling to an 11-2 major against York's Colman Ermi in the semifinals. His championship opponent, Muhlenberg's Frank Diesso, conceded the title to Nase via medical forfeit.
Wersinger was entirely dominant in the heavyweight section, pinning his first three opponents on the way to the title bout. After registering falls against Ursinus' Amir Pickens, Muhlenberg's Andrew Franklin, and RIT's Nate Degroff, Wersinger got a stiffer test in the championship bout against Ursinus' Jake Ahmad. He got all the points he needed in the second period, starting on bottom and breaking a scoreless stalemate with an escape and ultimately adding a takedown in a 3-1 decision.
Daddario eked out a 4-2 decision opposite NYU's Declan Skelly and received a medical forfeit into the semifinals. He needed only 57 seconds to pin Jack McCusker of Washington and Lee and set up a finals date with the unattached Nico Berlingeri, to whom he conceded a 21-9 major decision.
Romaine snatched two wins, including a pin, to make the quarterfinals at 165. After falling to W&L's Harrison Kelly, he reeled off three more victories (and another pin) to advance to the third-place match. Romaine ultimately settled for fourth after losing a 7-0 decision in a rematch with Kelly.
Luke Petaccia earned four wins during an impressive run at 165, while
Nick Sacco (two) and
Jack Murray (one) also won at least one bout at that weight class.
Connor Doherty produced two wins, one of them by fall, at 157.
