GRANTHAM, Pa. –
Jacob Falleni made a huge run through the consolation bracket to score a third-place finish at 133 and lead a contingent from the No. 16 TCNJ wrestling team at the Messiah Open on Saturday.
Kal-El Corbitt was the Lions' other place-winner, earning seventh at 184.
James Romaine (165),
Joe Daddario (184), and
Peter Wersinger (285) all won at least one match in the championship bracket of their respective weight classes.
Falleni advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-4 victory against Franklin & Marshall's Jack Bruce. He dropped an 11-4 decision to Lukas Richie of Penn, but continued his run in the consolations with a 45-second fall over York's Colman Ermi and a 9-4 win over Millersville's Matthew Morris.
From there, Falleni defeated American's Andrew Fallon, 7-3, to advance to the third-place bout, where he knocked off Messiah's Jordan Howard by a 5-1 score.
Daddario ousted Millersville's Patrick Johnson, 12-7, and Corbitt pinned Matt Myers of Nassau Community College in their respective openers at 184. Both lost in the quarterfinals, but Corbitt managed to guarantee himself a place with a win in the consolations, toughing out a 6-4 decision opposite Stevens' Michael Conrad. After a second loss, Corbitt pinned Muhlenberg's Deon Savage to seal seventh place.
Romaine needed two bouts to reach the quarterfinals and won them both, picking up a 10-1 major over Messiah's Hunter Zacerous and edging Stevens' Jarrett Weir, 8-6. He fell by a 3-1 count to Jack Janda of Drexel in the quarters and was eliminated one match short of placing, with Navy's Jakob Jenkins also eking out a 3-1 final.
Wersinger needed only 39 seconds to pin York's John Farrell in his first-round matchup at heavyweight, but suffered an injury in his second bout and was unable to continue.
Connor Doherty wound up on the short end of a 7-6 decision in his opening bout at 157, but came back to post a 17-0 technical fall against Muhlenberg's Dean Palmer in the consolation bracket. Another close decision went against him in his final bout, a 4-1 defeat at the hands of a wrestler from Stevens.
The wrestling team is back home to take on Centenary (N.J.) on Wednesday night.
