BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 8 TCNJ lacrosse team looked to be a dogfight with a group of Greyhounds on Tuesday afternoon at Moravian, but the Lions took control of a tied game at halftime to win, 17-9. With the victory, TCNJ moves to 6-0 on the season.
The Lions had six goal scorers on the day, and all six scored multiple goals.
Anna Devlin and
Ally Tobler each had four goals while
Jennifer LaRocca had three goals and three assists to lead the team with six points.
Jillian Westerby,
Anna Wright and
Veronika O'Donnell each had two goals.
Even with the variety and strength of the goal scoring, the Lions had trouble breaking away from the Greyhounds in the early going. The teams stayed within a goal of each other through the entire first half and well into the third quarter. It wasn't until Westerby's goal with 6:32 left in the third that either team had a two-goal lead with TCNJ's 7-5 advantage.
Lindsey Strohl scored three times for Moravian in the first quarter, including the third with just four seconds remaining in the period to tie the score at 3-3.
The Lions trailed, 5-4, late in the second quarter when a goal by Devlin with 1:42 left tied the score and set up a strong start to the second half.
Tobler gave the Lions a 6-5 lead at 10:34 of the third, and Westerby's aforementioned goal moved the lead to two goals. Just 47 seconds later, O'Donnell netted her second of the game on a feed from LaRocca to make it 8-5.
After a Moravian score to make it 8-6, the Lions went on a huge 7-0 run over the next 8:29 to put the game well out of reach. Devlin scored twice in the final 3:20 of the third, including one with an assist to
Katherine Naiburg to send the game into the final period with TCNJ ahead, 11-6.
In the fourth, TCNJ scored four goals in a 2:40 stretch to make it 15-6. LaRocca had consecutive goals in that stretch, including on a man-up opportunity.
Hailey Wexler earned the victory with 13 saves while tying LaRocca with a team-leading four ground balls. LaRocca, Wright and
Wayden Ay tied for the team lead with a pair of caused turnovers each.
The Lions return to action with a big home matchup with No. 3 Middlebury on Thursday at 4 p.m.
