Long Ball Propels Baseball Past Alvernia, 5-4

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ baseball team moved its home record to 10-3 with a 5-4 victory over Alvernia in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at George Ackerman Park. Chris Reeder hit his second home run in as many days, and Andrew Fernandez hit his first career homer. Freshman starting pitcher Jack Marchese earned his first career win, going 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on five hits.

The Lions built a 5-0 lead in the first half of the game, starting with Reeder's solo homer in the bottom of the first. Reeder now leads the team with three home runs, and two of them have come in the past two days. Reeder raised his team-leading slugging percentage to .500.

The Lions built upon their lead with a three-run fourth inning. Fernandez led off the inning with a solo homer to left to make it 2-0. It was his first career homer, and it comes on the heels of Fernandez's selection as NJAC Rookie of the Week on Monday for his performance last week.

Mike Lagravenis doubled the TCNJ lead to 4-0 with a two-run single up the middle that plated both Joey Cruciata and Sebastian JnoBaptiste with one out. Lagravenis went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and the two RBIs.

Fernandez scored another run in the fifth inning after walking with one out. He was at third when a wild pitch allowed him to score. TCNJ scored the run without the benefit of a hit in the inning. Fernandez and Jack Felipe each walked to set the table.

After Marchese was finally touched for three runs in the sixth inning, TCNJ held tightly to its two-run lead until the ninth. In Alvernia's final chance, the Golden Wolves put two men on after one out. An RBI single made it 5-4, but Alec Schwartz closed the game down with a pair of groundouts to end it with the go-ahead run on base.

TCNJ returns to NJAC play with a road game at No. 7 Rowan on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
