No. 6 Lacrosse Rolls Past Rowan For Big Road Win

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 6 TCNJ lacrosse team emerged from an extended see-saw period in the first half of Tuesday's NJAC clash at Rowan, putting its full offensive arsenal on display to pull away for a 21-9 victory in South Jersey.

Jennifer LaRocca continued her prolific ways with five goals and four assists and got plenty of help from Jillian Westerby (five goals, two assists) and Ally Tobler (six goals) as the Lions dispatched their league rivals with dominant second and fourth quarters.

Anna Devlin matched her own program record with 12 draw controls to spearhead a massive advantage in the circle and also added three goals of her own to help TCNJ (9-1, 2-0) improve to 4-0 on the road this season and extend its winning streak over the Profs to 16 consecutive games.

The Lions wasted little time getting on the front foot, grabbing a lead after just 37 seconds on a goal by Devlin.

Rowan, however, scored on back-to-back shots in a span of a little over a minute to nose in front before LaRocca caused a turnover and hit the back of the cage in transition to make it 2-2 after a breathless first several minutes of play.

Westerby put TCNJ back in front on a free-position conversion, but the Profs (4-7, 0-1) came right back with a marker off the ensuing draw to make it 3-3 at the 7:59 mark of the first.

Westerby deposited another go-ahead goal, then set up Tobler's first of the night to give TCNJ its first multi-goal lead just over a minute into the second stanza.

After Ashley Lechliter pulled one back for the Profs, Westerby fired a free-position shot into the back of the cage to polish off a first-half hat-trick, and the Lions cashed in on a Rowan turnover as LaRocca set up a goal by Devlin to extend the visitors' advantage to 7-4 midway through the frame.

LaRocca tacked on another tally to make it 8-4 before the Profs ended the three-goal run, but Tobler potted an unassisted goal right off the ensuing draw and LaRocca added a woman-up goal after a Rowan yellow card to lift the Lions to a 10-5 advantage with 2:19 left in the first half.

Just like the first half, TCNJ got on the board in a hurry in the second. This time, it was LaRocca assisting on a goal by Tobler only 22 seconds into the third period, and TCNJ was off and running with an 11-5 surplus on the scoreboard.

After Rowan came back with a goal, Westerby and Anna Wright found the back of the cage in succession to make it 13-6, but the Profs closed the third on a two-goal run.

Natalie Berry's well-placed free-position shot to the lower right corner of the cage made it 14-8 with 12:02 to play. Less than 45 seconds later, Tobler snagged a LaRocca pass in traffic and fired past the Rowan keeper stick side to stretch the margin back to seven.

Tobler's fifth goal of the night was nearly a facsimile of the previous, as she took a feed from Westerby, spun to her left and placed a shot into the top right corner for a 16-8 advantage with 9:21 remaining.

The teams traded the next two goals, with LaRocca restoring an eight-goal edge on a beautiful individual move that set up a shot inside the left post for a 17-9 lead at the 6:51 mark. Less than a minute elapsed before she was at it again, sending a shot from the right of the lane into the bottom left corner of the net.

Devlin capped her hat-trick with a running free-position goal with 5:37 to go, sending the rest of the game into a running-clock situation. It was still plenty of time for Westerby and Tobler to pad their final stat lines with goals about 90 seconds apart.

Devlin's dozen draws came nearly a year to the day after she broke the program record with 12 against Stockton. Sabrina Phillips piled up eight of her own, helping TCNJ to a 26-6 advantage in that category and a litany of extra possessions.

TCNJ put a remarkable 31 of its 35 shots on goal and conceded only 19 shots to the Profs.

Nikki Phillips paced the defense with two caused turnovers, while Julia Charest finished with seven saves.

The Lions head to Kean for an NJAC contest on Saturday.
