Stevens Slips Past Men's Tennis in Tight Showdown

4/16/2022 5:32:00 PM

Box Score EWING, N.J. – The No. 30 TCNJ men's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end with a 6-3 setback to visiting Stevens in a high-level matchup of regionally ranked squads on Saturday.

The Lions (12-2) suffered only their second loss of the season, and it was a bit of friendly fire as Ducks coach Steve Gachko was a four-year member of the TCNJ men's tennis team and spent two seasons as an assistant under head coach Scott Dicheck before taking over at Stevens in 2004.

The battle-tested Red Hawks (8-4), whose only losses this spring have come to nationally ranked teams, bested the Lions in three singles three-setters to seal the deal in a match that could have gone either way.

After Stevens posted wins at first and second doubles, Jacob Quijano and Akul Telluri won a 7-5 tiebreaker against Aashi Kulakarni and Sebastian Wroe at No. 3 to keep TCNJ within striking distance.

Stevens grabbed a 3-1 lead with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, but Matthew Michibata countered with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 defeat of Marc Feliu, the reigning MAC Freedom Player of the Year, on the number two court.

Justin Wain followed with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over regionally ranked Keegan Morris at No. 1, making it a 3-3 stalemate heading into the final three courts at-large.

All three outstanding courts went to a decisive third set, and all three went the way of the Ducks. Vivek Harinarayan brought Stevens to the brink with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against Adrian Tsui at No. 3, and Matt Luzzi clinched it with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Nick Matkiwsky at No. 5.

Philip Szkudlarski put the finishing touches on the 6-3 result with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 marathon win over Derek Jordan on the number six court.

The Lions now have a week to prepare for their regular-season finale, the de-facto NJAC East Championship match at NJCU. The winner will claim the East Division title and will head to the West Division winner for the NJAC championship and automatic NCAA qualifier.
